“Search Engine Optimization” is quite a mouthful, but it really has a very simple meaning. SEO is the act of making your content (The words and pictures on your website) easily found and relevant to the potential customer doing the searching from their computer at home or work. For example, suppose we had a mutual friend named Bill that ran a pizza shop in Boston. First of all, Bill would certainly need a website so people would be able to know information about his business… Things like hours of operation and perhaps a Google Map to the place. If Bill names his place “Bills Pizza” and never included the word “Boston” anywhere in the text of his website, how would Google or anyone else know Bills business was IN Boston?
Across the street from Bill, Cindy decided to open her own pizza place. Now Cindy made the wise decision to hire us, and we decided to locate her website at “BostonPizza.com”- Now both Google and regular people know where Cindys pizza store is, and hungry people that search for “Boston Pizza” will certainly find Cindys website in the search results before they find Bills. Cindys website may very well be at the top or near the top of the list, while Bills may not be on the list at all.
The example above is a ridiculously over simplistic and low level description of techniques that firms like ours use to get our Boston clients to the top of search results, but SEO is actually a multimillion dollar industry into itself. The internet is a very competitive place and having your business listed in the top results for a relevant search may be the difference between your customers finding you or finding your competitor first.
